With some help from his mom, a surf instructor, (behind the wave), Kihei, a 13-year-old Chihuahua mix, surfs this giant wave all the way to shore in the 2016 Surf City Surf Dog competition. The crowd went absolutely wild!  With this astonishing accomplishment, Kihei won an award, hung up his surf board and retired. He now enjoys spending quality time with his family.
Kihei says: Today was about choosing the right wave because it’s not about quantity on a rough day but about quality.  No mistakes today. Going with our plan, we made our way out to the safer outside reef, looking for the right wave.  My human put on her swim fins, a necessity for the extreme conditions, and we paddled to the outside reef. What seemed forever as we searched for the right wave, suddenly turned into one-minute left in the heat and the pressure was on.  She launched me on the first wave she saw, of a multiple wave set, and then it broke on the sandbar and jacked up into this epic over-human-head wave. Riding my Doyle Shorepounder, a special triple stringer model from the legendary Mike Doyle, it got me the speed to the bottom of the wave racing out the jaws of the explosive whitewater.  My support team got to me in the nick of time as I rode into shore. Using the right equipment was critical on a big day like this. This is my special “magic carpet” board dedicated to Mike Doyle, 1941-2019.
